Taris
A new paradigm in the treatment of bladder diseases
Pipeline: Interstitial Cystitis (IC)
TARIS' lead product is being developed to treat the pain and discomfort associated with Interstitial Cystitis (IC). While the exact number of people with IC is unknown, it is estimated that as many as 15 million people in the U.S. alone suffer symptoms consistent with this painful and debilitating disease for which there is no cure and insufficient treatment options. While IC can affect any age, race or sex, it is most commonly diagnosed in women (approx. 3-6% of U.S. women age 18 or over meet criteria for IC) and the mean age at diagnosis is 44 years.
IC is a bladder disease associated with significant pain and disability, as well as urinary urgency and/or frequency. People with severe cases of IC may urinate as many as 25-60 times a day, including frequent nighttime urination (nocturia). The disease can dramatically impact quality of life, including loss of work and reduced sexual intimacy. IC is associated with suicide rates five-to-seven times the national average. New therapeutic options for this debilitating disease are desperately needed; unfortunately, the challenge of delivering drugs to the urinary bladder has restricted the number of treatments in development.
